Technology Innovation Centre opened by NEC

The new centre represents a multi-million dollar investment in New Zealand by NEC Corporation and marks 50 years of business in the country. The center was officially opened by the Rt Hon John Key. The event was attended by New Zealand’s leading technology and science companies, NEC’s business partners, Government departments as well as senior executives from NEC Corporation. The Wellington Centre will showcase many of NEC’s leading edge technologies and be the base for research, development and technical support for NEC New Zealand.

The 1640m2 Centre includes a complete software development lab with a full scale, working NEAX 61E telephone exchange that forms the backbone of telecommunications in New Zealand. With 20,500 m of cable and 22 digital screens, the centre boasts biometric security systems, large scale commercial visual displays, machine to machine services and robotic technologies. The latest local research and development projects between NEC and partners from Canterbury University, Auckland University and Wellington Polytechnic are also featured.
